Long Description:
Interleukin-17B, also known as IL-17B, Cytokine CX1 and NIRF, belongs to the IL-17 family of structurally-related cytokines that share a highly conserved C-terminal region, but differ from one another in their N-terminal regions and in their distinct biological roles. IL-17B is expressed by T cells and stimulates the release of TNF-alpha and IL1-beta in the monocytic cell line, THP-1. It does not induce expression of IL1-alpha, IL-6, IFN-gamma or G-CSF in these cells (1-2). IL-17B is known to stimulate the proliferation of chondrocytes, bone and is highly expressed in nervous tissue, resulting in repair of diseased tissue. It is expressed highly in spinal cord and at lower levels in brain, pancreas, small intestine, lung and stomach (1). Expression of the IL-17B receptor (Evi27) appears to be restricted to human kidney, pancreas, liver, brain, and intestines. IL-17B, either alone or in combination with other cytokines or growth factors is known to aid wound healing (3).
