Plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1), a rapid inhibitor of both Urokinase-type plasminogen activator (uPA) and tissue-type plasminogen activator (tPA), is the major physiologic regulator of plasminogen activator activity.1 PAI-1 is a unique member of the serpin superfamily.2 It is also a major regulator of fibrinolysis and an important component of the acute phase (AP) response, the coordinated systemic reaction of an organism to tissue injury.3
